My First Review!

Lilly (daughter of John Noble)

Sir John Everett Millais, Bt.,

oil on canvas, 1864.

I have been desperately afraid.

Readers are the final judge. Readers are the ones who plunk their hard-earned money down, hoping to be transported and entertained.

What if readers disliked Dark and Disorderly? What if I totally disappointed them?

This morning my google alert brought up the review site Reading with Tequila.

She gave it five shots which means she "absolutely loved it." You can read the entire review here.

Some of her comments:

I never had a clue what was coming next...It was fantastic. Every twist and turn was a complete surprise and you just don't get those kind of experiences often enough...

I loved Lillie. She's strong, determined, has been through hell and she's not going to take it anymore. Still she cries for others pain and vomits in the face of grisly death. She is a balanced, realistic character that's easy to fall in love with.

I could go on at length about how wonderful this book is but the point is that (D&D) is a twisted and completely unexpected paranormal thriller that shocked me time and again. Bernita Harris is a fantastic new voice in the paranormal genre.

She liked the book. She loved Lillie.

I think you all know how much this first review means to me.

Bernita, I'm so happy for you! That's a truly wonderful first review. You need to print it and frame it, and then you need to look at it every time you start to doubt your own ability to write.

I'm even more desperate to read D&D now! It's a long wait till it's officially published.

Congrats! Your book is already loaded into my Nook and on my TBR list for this summer! :-)

It's scary, isn't it? I wasn't prepared for the amount of fear.

Wonderful, Bernita. I'm so, so happy for you. Reviews don't get any better than that.

Pre-ordered, I should have probably mentioned. With B&N, it will go right to my Nook on the release date. Cool, eh? :-)

Hugs back, Angie!

Thank you, Fairy. That's what I was thinking! No matter if the book is slammed after this ( and it will be) and I cry as little because I had failed that particular reader, I have this one.

Oh, Liz, that is so nice of you!

People, Liz has historical fiction coming out from Carina about the same time as mine.

Dear Raine! I am surprised though!
I never thought I'd get a review this good.

That's the word, Bets! Thank you!

Oh, LW, one does though! But she "got" it, everything I was trying to suggest/imply.

Thank you, Sarah! Really fearsome, isn't it?...waiting for the book to land with a great big dull thud!

Anne, I can't imagine a better review for D&D than this one!

Precie, thank you so much!

Alex, thank you! I just never expected anything like this.

Bernita, you shouldn't really be so surprised. All your posts are well done. You take great care in what you write, and all that hard work you did on the story shows off in the review!

Well done! I look forward to reading the story when I get it.

Kelly (Lynn) Parra said...

Congrats Bernita!! I'm thrilled for you!!

Wonderful! Hurray!

Bernita said...

Thank you, Barbara!
Hard work and careful craft don't automatically generate a good review, however.
You will notice that ghosts, for example, is normally something she doesn't care for in novels but found a reason to like in D&D...another reader/reviewer might not be so fair.

Kelly,thank you!
Kelly's "Criminal Instinct" is available now from Carina.
Meant to mention that Liz's historical title is "Captive Spirit."

I think it is so great that readers can check out a free chapter before they decide to buy.

Charles, thank you!
Five shots! I can't quite believe it still!

Bernita said...

Ugh! "Ghosts" are . Thinking of ghosts as a single element in the novel betrayed me into using an inappropriate singular.

Outstanding! Make sure it goes up with your book on the website, and if you can link it into Amazon it will mean a huge lift in sales. Add it into your blog permanently with the cover. This is the time you have to splash it everywhere you can for the release.

You so rock. Yay!

Bernita said...

Bernard, thank you! That's great advice!
I think Tequila links with Amazon and I'll ask Carina about linking good reviews!

Thank you, Archer. The next review might be really, really bad though.

Congratulations, hon! Well deserved. Keep up the good work!

Bernita said...

Lana, thank you. It's only one person's opinion but it's very sweet!

Thank you, SzelsoFa! A review like this is pure gold.

That's wonderful!! Congratulations! {{{hug}}}

I'm not surprised in the slightest, though. :-)

Awesome, but then again not surprising given your talent.

Travis, thank you. That's a kind thing to say.

I remember the sheer sweat of that, SWN! Hope it goes well, and thank you.
